UB INTERNATIONAL ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
Feb. 2nd, 2004
The Beijing International Team won its first tournament in 8 years. The Ulaan Baator CUP was remitted to coach Gervais Lavoie after the team defeated the Korea White Team 3 to 2. The score was 2 to 1 for Korea at the end of the second period, but Beijing came back strongly in the third period and scored 2 goals within the first 5 minutes to win 3 to 2.
Two of the three goals were scored by Matti from Finland and the winning
goals was scored by Timo Koponen, also from Finland. The VIP went to Matti
for his 2 goals and to Robert Gray, the goalie, who came from Dubai and was
a key player for that game.
The coach would like to thanks everybody: the two teams from Korea which
made that tournament very competitive. Special thanks to Chris for
organizing those two teams. Thanks also to the Mongolia Junior team who
shows us that there is great hope for the future of hockey in Mongolia and
mostly thanks to the Beijing players, including all the players who attended
that tournament in the past years and have made this event the
most enjoyable tournament in Asia.
Last, this year, the Finkel Award goes to Shen Ben, congradulation Ben.
Cheers,
Gervais

Team pictures appreciated Gervais Lavoie ---------------------- Dear Teammates and Supporters DateWe have a lot of interest for the tournament this year. So far we might have a total of 10 teams. If so the tournament will last three days, with the first game starting on the 22nd. If we have less team, the tournament will start on the 23rd. We will confirm the opening day by the first week of December. ConfirmationAll team should confirm no later then 1st of December 2003. Please confirm to this e-mail address: lavoieg@rougemont.com. FeesThe entrance fee is USD 350.00. It will cover the transportation (which is also use as a changing room) and a Mongolian traditional banquet. Any money left will go to the Mongolian Ice Hockey Federation. Mongolian VisasIn China, the Mongolian Embassy requests a letter of invitation. We usually have the letter send directly to the Embassy by the “National Olympic Committee of Mongolia”. The letter should state the names, passport number and exp. dates. If you are flying directly to UB, we can have a letter of invitation for your team sent to the Mongolian Embassy in your Country. If you are passing by Beijing and staying more then a day, we will add up your name on our list. If you want to come back to China after the tournament, you need to apply for a double entry visa. The Chinese Embassy in UB issues visa, but their opening hours are not always convenient. American citizens do not need a visa for Mongolia…. Price for Visa is 60.00 US in Beijing. Air ticketsThe cost of a return ticket from Beijing-UB is 3,300 RMB or 400 USD HotelsWe will try to accommodate everybody into no more then two hotels, so teammate can find each other more easily. The price last year was USD 50.00 for a double occupancy room. A single occupancy is the same price … for those who wants a suite, be aware that the main difference is in the price… We will confirm price and location by the first week of December. WeatherYes we are playing outside. The temperature should be in the area of –20 to –35, so we should not have any problem with “melting ice”. Still there is VIP seat for supporters that come from far (the bus). RulesUB tournament is known to be a full-contact tournament. Our Mongolian friends love it, although they hardly hit back… Still, we will go by the majority, so when confirming, please tell us is you prefer full-contact or no-contact ? OthersThis tournament is a big encouragement for Ice Hockey in UB. Since we started in 1998, Ice Hockey has gained a lot of popularity there. Still, kids lack of equipment and stick. So if you have old stuff and cheap hockey sticks, they are always welcome. Comments and volunteersVeterans of the UB tournament are welcome to add their comment. Ray, Andrew, Benzie, Fela, Pascal, Laprise, Dale, Pierre, Steve…We are also looking for volunteers who could come to UB a few days before the tournament. Cheers, Gervais
